What is Extended Care/Sober Living?
One of the hardest things about leaving inpatient residential treatment can be adjusting to being sober at home. For many in recovery, being home alone, or even with others who might not be sober, can be a huge trigger to use substances. In that case, Extended Care Housing, or Sober Living, can be a great step-down process for folks to try.
Typically, sober living homes are another way to extend the continuum of care by providing an additional stepping stone to living as a sober person in the world. They are meant to be a transitional measure, giving the alcoholic or addict in recovery a little more time and breathing room before entering back into the “real world.” At The Orchard, our Extended Care Houses are to help residents learn to live with others who share the common goal of recovery, and who hold each other accountable. This can include quiet hours, group processing and bonding. The main guideline is usually that while living in the house, sobriety must be maintained and worked on.
